Mandatory History

History in years 7 and 8 takes students into Ancient and Medieval worlds. To equip them with the skills of the historian. In year 9 and 10 these skills are applied to history from the Industrial Revolution up to the 21st century.

Elective History

Students in years 9 and 10 have the option to undertake additional study in History. In Elective History students develop further historical skills and explore topics of interest to them at a deeper level. Topics range from the Ancient, Medieval and Modern worlds. Students in Elective History will have the opportunity to compete a personal interest project into a topic of history of their own choosing.

History in years 11 and 12


Ancient History is a study into the ancient human past.

In Year 11 students learn about:

  • Investigating Ancient History 
    • The Nature of Ancient History  
    • Case Studies 
  • Features of Ancient Societies 

In Year 12 students learn about:

  • Core Study: Cities of Vesuvius – Pompeii and Herculaneum 
  • Ancient Societies 
  • Personalities in their Times
  • Historical Periods


Modern History provides students with opportunities to explore the events and issues of the past two centuries.

In Year 11 students learn about:

  • Investigating Modern History 
    • The Nature of Modern History
    • Case Studies
  • The Shaping of the Modern World 

In Year 12 students learn about:

  • Core Study: Power and Authority in the Modern World 1919–1946 
  • A National Study (Options: Russia 1917-1945 or USA 1919-1941)
  • Peace and Conflict (Options: Conflict in Europe 1935 or Cold War 1945-1991 or Conflict in Indochina 1954-1979)
  • Change in the Modern World (Apartheid in South Africa 1960–1994)
