COMMUNITY AND FAMILY STUDIES

CAFS investigates the unique contributions of individuals, groups, families and communities in the development of effective social structures. It encourages opportunities for students to become proactive members of society as they examine both their potential to adopt a range of roles and the responsibilities they have in contributing to society.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Through studying Food Technology, students develop knowledge and understanding of food and its contribution to health and quality of life. Through studying the nature of food, the production, processing and consumption of food, human nutrition and the impact of food on health and on society, students will develop skills in problem solving, analysing food and they'll develop skills in preparing and developing food products.

 

In the Preliminary Course students cover the following units:

In the HSC Course students cover

the Australian Food Industry

Food Manufacture

Food Product Development

TEXTILES AND DESIGN

Textiles and Design is a practical subject which includes developing skills through making textile items and developing knowledge, understanding and skills in design and textile science which reflect the important role that textiles plays in our lives as individuals and on society as a whole.

 

In the Preliminary Course students will cover:

The Australian textile Industry

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGIES (MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGIES)

Industrial Technology is a practical, 2 Unit Category A subject with focus areas of Timber, Graphics, Electronics and Multimedia offered at MGHS

 

In the Preliminary Course students complete project work as a means of attaining the required craftsmanship skills required to construct a major project in the HSC year. All practical work includes an accompanying management folio and associated theoretical knowledge is gained through the study of current and past industrial practices including communication and WHS.

 

In the HSC Course students will focus on their own Major Project. The Major Project is marked by external examiners and will form 60% of their HSC assessment. An extensive folio accompanies the Major Work and will show evidence of planning and management of the Major Project.

 

Multimedia Technologies

The Multimedia course focuses on specific skills and knowledge associated with the Multimedia Industry such as

Software skills

Current Production techniques and technologies

Design limitations

Environmental issues

Common management structures of companies in the multimedia industry.

 

INFORMATION PROCESSES AND TECHNOLOGY

IPT is the study of computer based information systems. It focuses on Information Processes performed by these systems and the information technology that allows them to take place.

 

The Preliminary Course covers:

Introduction to Information Skills and Systems

Tools for Information Processes

Developing Information systems

 

The HSC Course includes:

Project Development

Information Systems and Databases

Communication Systems

Two option strands from the following choices: Transaction Processing Systems, Multimedia systems, Decision Support Systems, Automated Manufacturing systems.

SOFTWARE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

This is a 2 Unit, Category A subject providing students with the opportunity to develop skills in designing and developing software solutions, project management and communication.

A variety of computer applications are used in the subject, however the focus is the development of computer based solutions that require the design of computer software. The subject provides students with opportunities for problem-solving, coding and an opportunity to be creative.

The subject would be of value to students interested in the fields of software development and computer science.

The Preliminary Course includes:

Year 9 and 10

Elective subjects on offer for Year 9 and 10 students through the TAS and Computing departments include:

CHILD STUDIES

In Child Studies students will develop knowledge and skills in the area of childcare. This is a 200 hour course providing the foundation for Senior Courses such as Community and Family Studies and Exploring Early Childhood.

HOSPITALITY

This course is for students who have an interest in Hospitality with a focus on commercial cookery and communicating food design, ideas and solutions.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY

This course actively engages students in learning about food in a variety of settings, enabling them to evaluate the relationships between food, technology, nutritional status and the quality of life. The subject focuses on the study of processing, preparation, marketing and consumption of food in domestic, commercial, industrial and global settings.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY - MULTIMEDIA

This course has a focus on the development of skills in the use of digital data. The practical focus will be on editing and creating presentations using all data types - text, graphics, audio, video and animation. Students learn about design and use a variety of software from the Adobe Suite - Animate, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premier Pro, After Effects, as well as 3D software, GameMaking and a use a variety of processes with new and emerging technologies, like 3D printing, Graphic Tablets and Cameras

 

INFORMATION AND SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY

Students study a range of topics linked to real world experiences and problem solving using computing technologies. Topics include Databases, Programming, Authoring and Multimedia, Hardware and Software, Digital Media, the Internet and Website Development and Current and Emerging technologies.

 

TEXTILES TECHNOLOGY

This course will develop skills in fashion design, clothing, textile are and costume manufacture. It is suitable for students with an interest in both fashion and design. The focus areas are
