Additional learning support
At our school, we ensure every student is ready to learn. We support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. You do not need a formal diagnosis for your child to receive support in a mainstream class. Support can begin at any stage of school.
Support that fits your child's needs
Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families to make support plans and adjustments that suits each child’s needs.
Additional learning support can include:
-
teachers and support staff working together with families and students.
-
small group tutoring to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support for students
-
regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports
-
changes to the classrooms:
- accessible classrooms
- assistive technology
- instructional resources
-
extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons
-
assessment adjustments:
- more time
- simpler language
- breaks during tasks
- different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).
We know when a student needs help when:
- teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
- reviewing assessment results and learning progress
- parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support.
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
The Hive
The Hive is a vibrant and inclusive learning community at MGHS designed to meet the diverse needs of our students.
The Hive comprises 12 dynamic classes, including seven multi-categorical classes, one dedicated to students with ASD, one for hearing support, and specialised wellbeing-focused classes — Wyvern and Phoenix. Students join The Hive through a tailored enrolment process managed by the Maitland Education Office, ensuring each learner’s unique strengths and needs are recognised from the start.
Our educational approach reflects a high school model, where students move between classes led by expert teachers specialising in different areas, supported by dedicated learning support staff. This structure fosters independence, social connection, and personalised learning pathways. From Year 9, students are also supported to access mainstream subjects, embracing opportunities to broaden their academic experience.
Nestled above the Western Oval, The Hive offers a thoughtfully designed space that nurtures growth, wellbeing, and collaboration. Our skilled teaching and support team bring a wealth of knowledge and compassion, ensuring every student benefits from tailored teaching and targeted support.
Every student works with staff, families, and themselves to create an Individual Education Plan (IEP) focused on literacy, numeracy, social and behavioural goals, alongside personalised hearing or cultural goals where relevant. This collaborative process guides learning and progress throughout the year.
Students engage in a wide range of subjects from Years 7 to 12, including core areas such as English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, PDHPE, Food Technology, and specialised Life Skills courses for senior students. Our team partners closely with mainstream teachers to provide tailored learning experiences that celebrate each student’s potential.
Communication is key at The Hive, with dedicated case managers coordinating between families, teachers, and external agencies to ensure smooth and ongoing connections.
Beyond the classroom, students are active members of the MGHS community, participating in whole school events, extracurricular programs, leadership opportunities, and running the student-led Grossmann Cafe. Community engagement is a cornerstone of our approach, featuring travel training, work and recreational sampling, local excursions, and exciting overnight camps.
The Hive is more than a place to learn — it’s a supportive, inclusive space where every student is empowered to thrive and belong. We welcome you to discover how we celebrate diversity and foster achievement together.
